The Children’s Museum of Art and Science (CMAS) has been bringing art and science activities to the youth of Lake County in various ways since 1991. From Family Science Nights at Lower Lake High School, to converting a Lake County Fair building into a hands-on art and science “Exploratorium,” to providing a one day art and science camp at Anderson Marsh, Taylor Observatory and the Ely Stage Stop, CMAS has served thousands of students ages pre-school to teens.
As the new year starts, CMAS begins a new path. Under the leadership of Stephanie Figueroa, owner of the Art House Gallery in Clearlake, an ambitious agenda of activities is already being developed by her board and volunteers.
A free 2 hour Lego robotics workshop will be held at the Redbud Library on the second Saturday of every month beginning in February. Students in grades 3-8 can sign up at the Redbud Library by calling Meg at 994-5115. Each workshop is limited to 20 students. If a session is filled, you can sign up for the next month.
The eleven murals of local wildlife created by the Clearlake Wildlife Youth Art Project students last summer, are now mounted at various businesses around the city. Clearlake Wildlife Youth Art Project is now on Google Maps. Here is the Google Map Link to view the murals and their locations. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1nKjiJaJ5rS5Lq6cqw4aQuy4J1yZRgn4d&usp=sharing
Are there any students interested in taking on the Clearlake Wildlife Art Challenge from start to finish? Come to the Art House Gallery and draw a picture of a critter (fish, reptile, bird, animal, insect) in Lake County in their natural habitat. Join the Clearlake Wildlife Youth Art Project to create a mural to be placed somewhere in our county. Our After School Art Program allow students to work at their own pace. Additional businesses who are interested in having a mural on their building please call Figueroa to be put on the list at 295-1030.
An exciting event is planned for April 7 when the Lawrence Hall of Science of Berkeley will come to Clearlake and set up a Mystery Festival program. This program combines the solving of a mystery and hands-on scientific investigation in a highly engaging educational activity. As students use scientific tests to unravel a fake crime, they will be exposed to a variety of forensic techniques. Any one of these tests is interesting and educational alone; together, they add up to a powerful and motivating experience students will remember for years.
Students will be able to sign up through their teacher at their school. This event will be open for any students in third to twelfth grade. Detailed information will be sent out to all schools as the date draws nearer. If there is sufficient interest, a second day of sessions may be made available.
Throughout the year, CMAS will continue to work with schools, after school programs, youth organization events, and other organizations as requested to provide free art and science activities in accordance with their mission and goals.
Because all activities are free to participants, CMAS must also focus on donations and fundraisers. To contribute and support CMAS, here are ways to that you can help:
