CLEARLAKE >> Students who attended the free Lego robot workshop on Saturday, March 10 at the Redbud Library in Clearlake had nothing but smiles and praise for the experience.
William Rodgers, who is a huge Lego fan, said, “It is really fun. CMAS (the Children’s Museum of Art and Science, the group which puts on these monthly workshops) should always do this. I have a bunch of Legos at home and I made a car that can go. If CMAS started a robot club, I would join!” Students worked for about two hours creating various robots from the kits. Magdalena Rivas, who would like to be either an inventor or a marine biologist when she grows up, worked with her partner Opal Patton who said,” It’s fun to make robots that can move and talk.”
These free Lego robot workshops are held at Redbud Library on the second Saturday of each month from 10 am to noon and are open to any student age 8-13. Students must pre-enroll by calling Meg at 995-5115. Each workshop is limited to 20 students. Parents need to sign a permission slip when they drop off their student.
CMAS will be having a pasta dinner on Friday, March 23 from 5 to 8 pm at the Aromas Café located on the Woodland Community College, Clearlake campus. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $5 for children and are available at the door, at the Art House Gallery or the Aromas Café. Culinary Arts Program students will create tasty pasta dishes and the Baking Program students will offer luscious brownies for dessert. There will be music and raffle baskets.
Proceeds from this dinner will be used to support the Lego robot workshops and other free art and science events that CMAS offers, including the Clearlake Youth Art Mural project and the up-coming Lawrence Hall of Science Mystery Festival. This event will be held at the Clearlake Community Center on May 12. Students will use their logic and forensic clues to unravel a crime scene. CMAS will also be providing two free activities as part of the Easter egg hunt at the Moose Lodge on March 25. A giant bubble tub will be set up as well as a booth where students can make origami baskets.
Attending the pasta dinner on March 23 is a delicious way to support a variety of free art and science activities for Lake County youth.
